Alfan, what a great idea! here it seems the most appreciated thing is playing fast; I think people have forgotten golf is supposed to teach relaxation, especially the younger generation.

On a lighter note:

I'm not being picky
I'm just being honest

Purple is for Lent, not Christmas.

Turquoise blue is the color for Christmas lights, not dark blue.

End of art soapbox /

I'm not being negative; I just forgot to get the film developed!
Hope you all had a bountiful Thanksgiving last Thursday!!

Alfan, when you play golf, do you use the "repair your divet, plus one other" courtesy rule?

So, you all, how about, support yourself, plus one other, in terms of helping the poor?

Welcome to all the newbies

I just came across this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/25/world/europe/25czar.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2

Maybe it is old news but apparently this summer, they've finally found the two missing bodies of the Romanov family...Aleksei and one of the missing sisters.

Just a bit of trivia to round out your day.

Yes, Anne I'm still addicted to Free Rice. I love 'ridley' which is a sea turtle and 'cenacle' - a small dining room - so obscure!!  ..but fun when you know them.

OMG! The "Free Rice" page -- guess the meanings of some obscure words and, for every correct guess they donate ten grains of rice to UN hunger programs -- is addictive.

Some words i loved: "snark" "beamish" "grok" "wyvern" (a dragon) "magus" (a sorcerer) . . . .

I hope they're work is for real -- it's a great time-waster for the bibliophiles here.

How I Became Smitten:

1. Die Hard -- loved his wit and his voice, and then I forgot about it.

2. Robin Hood -- Overall, it's WAAAAY to cartoon-like for my taste, but he had great comic timing and a wicked glint in his eyes. I either turn it off or LOL )

3. A few years later, I had to decide on a college major: should it be my first love (history) or something practical and boring? Sleepless, I watched most of TMD on local late night TV. *A bow twangs*

Could I remember Alan's voice and eyes and smirk after two movies? No. I found the "Alan Rickman Guestbook" and half.com -- and eBay. My computer screen, my video library, and at least one 2" ring binder of photos and clippings have received the results.

I'd love to stay, but, I have to be up early tomorrow.

Big Challenge (ignore this if you don't have a lot of time, I've been looking for months):

On  public TV, I saw "Sister Wendy" showing a sketch of a man and woman embracing (nude), but I cannot remember the title.

I have a piece of sticky paper, with a marble print on it, and part of it, looks remarkably like that sketch! just recently I learned Sister Wendy is a self-taught art critic from Britain (?)...surely someone else saw that sketch.

Once I visisted Dee's site and told her about it on her guestbook, but I can't find the guestbook anymore. I don't think she comes in here, anyway,
But --- I would be absolutely amazed if someone can find that sketch, it would be really amusing if that sketch appeared by conincidence on my decorative marble paper!!

Hope we are never forced in any way to vote; neither by social pressure, law, insistence of criminals, etc.

I say, if you don't like any of the candidates, you don't have to vote.

With forced voting,  if all the candidates were corrupt, you would be forced to vote for someone you don't want in office.

Voting must always be voluntary.

Thanks Maori. That clears it up for me. Same system here then. I've always tried to follow the political scene here but this fall I decided to get more involved. I always vote but I figured if I was going to complain about anything I should get involved in some way no matter how small. There's a lot more ito it than I realized but I found it informative and interesting.

Thanks for your reply, Semper. I thought it had to do with Alan Rickman and why he looks so well rested lately, as discussed today on the ARDH GB, I was way off!

Nowadays, with the media, politicians do become quite well known and can even get fans, too. I thought maybe she had a fan following because she was once in theater, for example. Wonder if she'll ever go back to acting?

Dumpy, "MP" would be 'Member of Parliament'.  We also have a similar Parliamentary system in Canada. Here an MP is someone who is  elected to represent your district or 'riding' in the federal government. Does anyone know how long Ms. Horton served as an MP and what her constituency was?

I would like to know if someone can take the "When Love Speaks" interview with Alan from the ARDLH Vidoew page and convert it to a Windows Media Player-friendly format? Or something low res which works on my two0generations old QT?

I find that more files are WMP friendly, so I didn;'t see the point of paying for updates.

This is a bit of a tenuous link to AR - but he was involved in the "Make Poverty History" campaign. There is a great (US) site called Free Rice. It is a vocabulary quiz. You get given a word and four options for the meaning. Every time you get an answer right, the sponsors donate 10 grains of rice to the UN food programme. The correct answers soon mount up and there's quite a satisfaction in donating 1000 grains or so of rice. I wish I was a water engineer and could dig wells or a nurse who could help in a local hospital but this is a good way of contributing to people who are less fortunate than us.

Disorderly conduct: think of the smilie with the horse sweeping it under the rug, so to speak.

"Let's be silly!" - an invitation to have fun.
Translate to German, and then translate back to English, and you get:
 "Let's get stupid!"
Not quite the same sentiment. No wonder we have misunderstandings!!

Dear Nicky (and lurkers - I know you're out there!

Sometimes I don't know how to post my comment. If I make it simple, it leaves too many unanswered questions. Example: "Alan should update his hair."
Someone might think I'm talking about his hair color and will not want him to color it, or someone might think I mean he should get it done so he has a full head of hair like the Sheriff, but what I really meant was - just cut it shorter, instead of the shag he has now.  ( I'm sure some would wonder about the word "shag". etc., etc. )

Let's be silly! I
If it's too wordy, it can be just as vague and this has happened when we were on others' ARGB, but if there is patience and a willingness to lend enough time to the problem at hand, anyone could reasonably come to the easier thinking. And so many of us want that, don't you? oh, of course, we were there that one time and we were all laughing about how difficult it is to see the words but not the person saying them and what they mean by how they say it, of course we've all experienced that too, right? I think that's how it is, it can be difficult to be clear enough so that everyone says, hey I know what you mean. That was long ago.

We all can't be precise in our writing, that's a talent, that can earn money!

Hello all and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!  I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable holiday!

If anyone is interested in reading about my trip to France in September to the language and cooking school, I've finally got most of it posted to my live journal (see link above).  I still haven't gotten all of it...I'm missing the Paris part, but since I've returned my Mom was in the hospital for two weeks and I've been taking care of her since she got out.  That doesn't leave a lot of time for updating live journals.

Hope it's not too boring.  Enjoy.

Hello all!!  Been away for some time....first I took a nice (and much needed) vacation, then I came home to real life drama and crashing computers.  So, this is the first time in a month that I've had a chance to catch my breath and look at what's been going on.  My, lots of yummy Sweeney Todd stuff to absorb.  Great pictures!  Haven't had a chance to look at the trailers yet.

I had a very similar reaction at first to the Dumbledore announcement.  I was surprised, after all the controversy that the books have already stirred up (from religious groups, etc.) that she would drop such a bomb that is sure to stir up more pitch-fork waving zealots that will surely be calling for her head.  But then I thought, maybe that's exactly what she wants?  Maybe this was just a little playful poke-in-the-eye on her part.  Lord knows, she's had to endure 10+ years of hearing all their crap.  How many idiotic articles have been written that assign the most ridiculous meaning and motives to her work?  Through it all, she's been remarkably restrained in her responses.  Now that the series is finally concluded, she might as well enjoy stirring up a little controversy.....but not the kind that everyone was expecting.  No, ever that master of redirection and the red herring, she has pulled one more unexpected rabbit out of her hat.  Ha, ha!!  Good for you JKR!  If you read her further explanation of how DD let his attraction to Grindlewald cloud his judgment, it all makes a lot of sense.  So, I'm o.k. with it.

Hi Nicky,
I agree with you. I wish she had just let the books be as they were and as you say "kept the secret to herself". I dont have a problem with the issue at hand either, but can see where some parents may. Bad enough a lot of them wouldnt allow the kids to read or even see the movies because the church told them not to!
Oh well, Dumbledore is still the greatest wizard in my mind and stays the same as I have pictured him all along. (I always somehow visualized a little romance between him and Professor McGonagell..Who knows???
Have a good one all and take care. Off to bed.

Hello gang-
Glad to see there's some of us
still alive. Uhm, this thing about Dumbledore
is a tough call.Personally, I don't think it's
all that big of a deal. However, I can sense
that alot of parents are going to have their
feathers ruffled over this one. Let's face it:
Loads of people still can't get over the idea of
homosexuality. Especially when it comes to
the literature and entertainment of children.
As an adult, it certainly dosen't bother me,
and quite frankly, I have better things to worry
about than a fictional character being gay.
However, children don't exactly know how to absorb and understand all of this. I think perhaps
JKR should've kept this one under her hat.
Not to sound negative or "crumble the cookie",
but if you get an army of parents who aren't tolerant on the subject, then it's quite possible
that they will take these wonderful books away
from the children. And to me, that's the real tragedy. I'm also hoping that this wasn't a publicity stunt, because it really isn't neccessary.
My god, JKR and her books are famous enough as it is! Ok, I've had too much coffee, and worked too many long shifts. Hope everyone is well and good. Cheers all!
